Native Americans and Pilgrims

We have watched several videos on Discovery Education about the Wampanoag tribe and the Pilgrims.  We have learned about the Wampanoag culture and the Pilgrim culture.  We talked about the Pilgrim's voyage on the Mayflower and how they worked with the Wampanoag tribe to survive and how they celebrated the first Thanksgiving.  We studied about Native American hieroglyphics and how that was their way to communicate and tell stories.  The children painted hieroglyphics on their Native American vests and chose a Native American name.  They also strung colored noodles for necklaces to wear with their vests for our Thanksgiving meal.

For the Pilgrim culture, we talked about the Mayflower and what it was like to be on that voyage and going to a new land where there were no stores, houses, etc.  We talked about what we would want to bring on the voyage to have in the new land.  We read Sarah Morton's Day:  A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl and Samuel Eaton's Day:  A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Boy.  We compared and contrasted their lives and talked about the differences with our lives today.  We also wrote books to document what we learned about the Wampanoag and Pilgrim cultures.

What would you pack on the Mayflower voyage to take to the New World?

Pumpkin Activities

Here are pictures of our class exploring the inside and outside of a pumpkin. We described the outside and counted the lines. We described the inside and predicted how many seeds were in it. We then counted all the seeds. Our pumpkin had 606 seeds. We washed and dried the seeds so we could bake them and eat them.
